Them & Us

“Are we alive or dead, or somewhere inbetween?”

Them and Us is an interactive performance and research and development project.

The first phase of research culminated in a presentation where 12 people took part in an interactive performance in May 2008.  The second phase involved the development of a game interface tested at the Mixed Reality Lab in 2009.

Them and Us is intended to be a meeting place between the seemingly exclusive worlds of computer games and theatre.  Them and Us is about dissolving boundaries between the performer and audience, between observing and taking part.

Active Ingredient are  exploing the conflict between interaction through technology and face to face human communication. Looking at the way people interact with each other in social spaces, that enable them to break down the barriers within a community (the audience) to engender a feeling of trust and a suspension of disbelief.

The artists collaborated with computer scientists and other artists, to explore the experience of people interacting in a fixed location. Attempting to create order and game play out of the subtleties of human to human interaction, through people’s emotional responses and body language.
