Thinking and Making: Showing and Telling

The Prediction Machine presented at Thinking and Making at Primary
Rachel from Active Ingredient will be presenting her practice and research that has taken place over the last 4 years, whilst she has being doing a PhD based at Horizon and the Mixed Reality Lab, University of Nottingham.

As part of the first Old Skool Breaks titled ‘Thinking & Making : Showing & Telling’ artists Rachel Jacobs and Belen Cerezo are displaying some diagrams, work in progress and documentation. Besides this, in an informal presentation the artists will discuss how they are turning thinking and making into showing and telling, within the context of their current research. These presentations will be followed by an open discussion and a reflection with the artists and academics Frank Abbott and Joanne Lee.

At the end of four years of thinking and making Rachel Jacobs is nearly ready to submit a PhD in Computer Science. Her research has been informed by two international projects that she made with her arts company Active Ingredient – A Conversation Between Trees(2010 – 2011) and Timestreams (2012 – 2013). She will be presenting the sketches, drawings and machines that have resulted from this work that merges art, science, technology and research.

Belen Cerezo is in the final stage of her practice-led PhD in which she is researching on how images function. More specifically she is examining the performative uses of images in connection to some techniques used in documentary filmmaking. Belen will be presenting two research diagrams and some works in progress.
